Christian Dior Haute Couture Fall 2012
A
Stellar Debut for Raf Simons
There were stars like Jennifer
Lawrence, Marion Cotillard, and Sharon Stone front row at Christian Dior’s
Haute Couture show this season, but the real stars were all of the fashion
designers (many of whom were thought to be up for the job as John Galliano’s
successor) that were the real stars. Among those who turned out to see Raf
Simons' debut as the creative head of the storied couture house were Donatella
Versace, Marc Jacobs, Alber Elbaz, Riccardo Tisci, Azzedine Alaïa, Kris Van
Assche, Jean-Louis Scherrer, Pierre Cardin, Olivier Theyskens, and Diane von
Furstenberg. Needless to say, the pressure that Simons is under given the level
of excitement and anticipation cannot be understated. LVMH must be thanking its
lucky stars, however, because the designer’s debut was nothing short of
stellar.
Whether with a long sleeve,
cinched-waist floor length citrine dress or with a bright red belted trench
dress with oversized pockets, the designer’s collection was minimalist
perfection. The most memorable looks of the collection featured structured billowing
long skirts which recalled some of Simons' work at Jil Sander. Similarly, much
like at Sander, Simons kept frills and heavy adornments to a minimum focusing
instead on colors, prints, and beautiful shapes.
