Top 10 Red Carpet Moments of 2011

This year has been full of unforgettable red carpet moments, both good and bad. Celebs seemed to play it a bit safer than years past, preferring classic shades and silhouettes to crazy concoctions, with Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Katy Perry being the notable, frequently extreme exceptions. Even at events known for potential shock value, fashions were, for the most part, relatively tame. Thankfully, the good outweighed the bad in 2011, so here are the year’s fashionable highlights

Mila Kunis
at the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

The awards season started at the beginning of the year and many expected the then-pregnant Natalie Portman to capture the style spotlight. In reality, her Black Swan co-star stole her thunder in a variety of amazing numbers like this Alexander McQueen Resort 2011 chiffon printed gown with sweetheart neckline. Mila polished off this particular look with an estimated $300,000 worth of Cartier gems.

Lady Gaga
at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards

Would be complete the list of the year’s most memorable red carpet moments, without Lady Gaga? She’s certainly provided a lot of eye-catching ensembles to select from (like when she introduced the world to her male alter ego, Jo Calderone), but her egg entrance at the Grammys towers above the rest.

Cate Blanchett
at the 83-rd Annual Academy Awards

The Givenchy Spring 2011 Couture lilac pleated chiffon gown Cate donned for this year's Oscars at the end of February was the epitome of glamour.
It featured embroidered pearl detailing with yellow accents and was partnered with Van Cleef & Arpels jewels.

Princess Beatrice
at the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton

Although it's not technically a red carpet moment, Beatrice's attire for the epic ceremony at Westminster Abbey in late April gained notoriety for that fascinating Philip Treacy fascinator. Such a pity, since it took all the attention away from her pretty blush-colored Valentino coat and dress along with coordinating shoes, which all came from the Spring 2011 Couture collection.

Daphne Guinness
at the Met Gala

The Irish heiress is known for ornate and outlandish getups, so no one was really surprised by her dramatic choice for the annual gala, which this year paid tribute to Alexander McQueen. Daphne's insanely feathered Spring 2011 creation with excessively exaggerated hips is actually from the late designer’s fashion house. Silver Mary Janes, tasseled earrings and her signature voluminous hairdo rounded out the look.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
at the Opening of the Moscow Film Festival

Rosie treated her promotional tour for Transformers: Dark of the Moon like a veritable runway show. At the Moscow Film Festival, the model turned actress opted for this chic Gucci Fall 2011 gown, which included a chartreuse one-shoulder floral appliqué top paired with a sheer black skirt. Her sandals were also by Gucci, while those rings are from Vhernier and Jack Vartanian was behind her earrings.

Natalia Vodianova
at the White Fairy Tale Love Ball

Natalia wore a custom design by Valentino Garavani to the ball over in Paris this summer. The supermodel's red tulle gown was topped off with a pearl-accented tiara covered delicately by a red hood and was partnered with a matching clutch along with a pearl bracelet to create this Little Red Riding Hood meets couture look.

Emma Watson
at the New York Premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Hermione has certainly grown up, and at no point was that transformation more obvious than at the New York unveiling of the franchise's last offering. Emma's Bottega Veneta Fall 2011 gown was extremely edgy with its linen bustier and satin bronze full skirt, but it was her intense smoky eyes and slicked back hairstyle that really made a statement. Chocolate brown Giuseppe Zanotti platform peep-toes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry completed the look.

Beyonce
at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards

It was on the red carpet at the always unpredictable awards show where Beyonce revealed she was pregnant by posing with her hands cradling her stomach. She looked positively radiant, especially decked out in this orange one-shoulder Lanvin silk crepe gown, which was combined with jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz as well as Rene Caovilla ivory platform heels with Swarovski crystal and pearl details.

Nina Dobrev
at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards

The Vampire Diaries actress had the fashion equivalent of a coming-out party dressed in this knockout red Donna Karan Resort 2012 strapless gown.
Nina’s accessories were also on par and included Neil Lane gems, a clutch by Judith Leiber and Brian Atwood footwear.
