Red Carpet - SAG Awards 2012

There couldn't have been a more perfect time than now, smack in the middle of awards season, for New York magazine to come out with a "Celebrity Economy" cover. Among the features inside the magazine, which hits newsstands this week, is a story on What It Takes to Send Charlize Down the Red Carpet (hint: $8 million-plus dollars). With that in mind, let's take a look at the SAG Awards red carpet.

Among the night's standouts were Amber Heard who stunned in a Zac Posen Pre-Fall 2012 black gown with multiple cut-outs and Natalie Portman who dazzled in Giambattista Valli Spring 2012 Haute Couture (though I can't help but wish — for better or worse — she had opted to also wear the headpiece the chiffon gown was styled with on the runway). Equally impressive were Emma Stone in an Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2012 cocktail dress and Michelle Williams in a red lace Valentino look.

Less impressive were Emily Blunt, who walked the red carpet in a prom-esque Oscar de la Renta gown, and Angelina Jolie who opted for a liquid black Jenny Packham dress that lacked the usual sophistication (and certainly excitement), of some of the actresses more recent choices. Similarly disappointing was Ashlee Simpson also in a black Jenny Packham look. As for Lea Michele, the actress surprised by not wearing Marchesa, choosing instead for a skin-tight Versace gown that arguably revealed a little too much skin. Sofia Vergara, however, did opt for Marchesa and looked stunning, as usual.

Also worth singling out were Katrina Bowden who walked the red carpet in a white Amsale dress (likely a wedding gown since that is what Amsale, who does not have a ready to wear line, is known for), and announced that she was engaged. As for the night's most surprising look, that one came courtesy of Jane Krakowski in a black Antonio Berardi gown.
